Antonio Pimentel wins the VII Costa del Sol International Amateur Open

VII Open Internacional Amateur Costa del Sol - Santa Clara Golf Marbella

The tournament was held at Santa Clara Golf Club with participation of eighty European players.

On Sunday  27th of November was held the VII Costa del Sol International Amateur Open at Santa Clara Golf Club Marbella. The tournament was sponsored by the Costa del Sol Tourist Board and Golfspain.com, in collaboration with Iberia and Cajamar.

The absolute winner of the competition was Antonio Pimentel, a player from Marbella with handicap 1,4 who managed to complete his round with 74 strokes, 3 over par of the course. Antonio made his best game on a magnificent day, with very fast greens and strategically positioned flags on the greens.

Santa Clara Golf Marbella offered a fantastic look with its greens and fairways in excellent conditions, the weather was superb for the practice of golf, with high clouds and a gentle breeze from the east. In the overall calculation of the 80 players taking part only 29 birdies could be counted, which gives an impression how difficult the course was.

The most difficult hole of the tournament was the 10th hole, a par 5 with 455 meters that crosses a river before the raised green, in addition a green with considerable movement, the third shot requires great precision, and the average of the tournament was 7,1 strokes for this hole. The easiest hole was the 3rd, a short par 4 of 230 meters, with a very pronounced dogleg, where players could choose to take the risk and attack directly the green.

The event was attended by 80 players of different nationalities, British, German, Belgian, Finnish, Irish, Czechs, Russians among others, and of course Spanish, some of them from golf clubs of the center, especially from Madrid and Barcelona as well as from Northern Spain

The competition was played as medal play in the first category and individual stableford in the second and third category. The name of the scratch winner will be engraved in the trophy especially designed for this event.

The Costa del Sol International Amateur Open was created by Golfspain.com in collaboration with the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, backing the idea of attracting annually the best European players, and is currently one of the most prestigious events in Andalusia.

Golf is a very important segment for the Costa del Sol, which offers more than fifty golf courses from Sotogrande to Velez-Málaga. Golf tourism improves considerably low seasons, and is a driving force for residential tourism as well.

The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by Francisco Amóros, Director of the Golf Area at the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, Ignacio Apolinario, Director of Santa Clara Golf Marbella and Alberto Fernández Galindo, Representative of Golfspain.com in Andalusia.

The results of the individual handicap classification were as follows:

First Category up to hcp 11,4:

1. Juan Jesus Peralta Castillo – hcp 5,8 – 70 strokes

2. Jose Manuel Montero Alonso – hcp 10,7 – 70 strokes

3. Antonio Pimentel Jiménez –hcp 1,4 – 74 strokes

Second  Category hcp 11,5 to 18,4

1. Ignacio Apolinario Zarate – hcp 14,3 – 39 points

2. Reinhard Friedrich – hcp 16,3 – 39 points

3. Cristobarl Rodríguez García – hcp 15,2 – 36 points

Third Category hcp 18,5 to 26,4 Gents and  36,4 Ladys
